# Amor als Sieger (Cupid as Victor) [Gemäldegalerie](https://smb.museum-digital.de/institution/12) Sammlung: [Malerei](https://smb.museum-digital.de/collection/141) Inventarnummer: 369 Beschreibung Caravaggio kam um 1592/93 aus der Lombardei, von wo er prägende Eindrücke der Werke Savoldos, Lottos, Romaninos und Morettos mitbrachte, nach Rom. Eine Zeitlang arbeitete er in der Werkstatt des führenden Spätmanieristen Giuseppe Cesari, doch schon bald brach er mit den Kunstregeln des römisch-florentinischen Manierismus. Sein ganz neuer Ansatz eines direkten Rückgriffs auf die Natur, die Wirklichkeit, und der Einsatz gebündelten Lichts und kontrastreichen Helldunkels als bildnerische Mittel revolutionierten die Kunst in Rom um 1600 und machten ihn mit Annibale Carracci, Elsheimer und Rubens zu einem der Bahnbrecher der Malerei des 17. Jahrhunderts. Die ersten bedeutenden öffentlichen Aufträge, die Bilder der Contarelli- Kapelle in S. Luigi dei Francesi und die Seitenbilder der Cerasi-Kapelle in S. Maria del Popolo, machten ihn berühmt. Bedeutende Familien erwarben und bestellten Bilder bei ihm, neben den Mattei, Borghese und Barberini vor allem die Giustiniani, die zu seinen wichtigsten Mäzenen und zugleich zu den fortschrittlichsten Kunstsammlern in Rom zählten: der Marchese Vincenzo Giustiniani (1564-1637) und sein Bruder, der Kardinal Benedetto Giustiniani (1544-1637). Von den fünf originalen Werken Caravaggios aus ihrer Sammlung, die 1815 in Paris vom preußischen König en bloc erworben wurde, überstanden nur zwei die unmittelbaren Folgen des Zweiten Weltkrieges: der Ungläubige Thomas in der Bildergalerie in Potsdam-Sanssouci und der 1602 entstandene Amor als Sieger. Der jugendliche Gott der irdischen Liebe triumphiert als lächelnder Sieger, gemäß den Worten Vergils: »Omnia vincit amor« (Die Liebe besiegt alles; Eclogae 10, 69), über Wissenschaft, Kunst, Macht und Ruhm. Die Instrumente und Symbole der »freien Künste«, der Lorbeer des unsterblichen, vor allem literarischen Ruhms und die Rüstung, Zeichen der Kriegskunst und des Kriegsruhms, liegen verstreut zu seinen Füßen, als »Trophäen«, als Siegesbeute (so Caravaggios Biograph Bellori 1672): links ein Notenheft und zwei Saiteninstrumente, eine Violine und eine Laute, davor Winkel und Zirkel, die Instrumente der Geometrie; hinter dem rechten Bein Amors, halb verdeckt vom Lorbeer, ein geöffnetes, dicht beschriebenes Manuskript und eine Rohrfeder; rechts am Rande, hinter Amors linkem, abgespreiztem Bein, Krone und Zepter als Zeichen irdischer Herrschaft und Macht. Amor scheint auf einem blauen, sternbesetzten Globus zu sitzen, das heißt über die ganze Welt zu triumphieren; gleichzeitig verweist die Himmelskugel auf die Kunst der Astronomie. Sie scheint allerdings zum Schluß vom Maler eingefügt zu sein. Der Knabe sitzt nicht wirklich auf dem flachen Rund des Globus, sondern auf einer Kante, über welche rechts die Draperie herabfällt und auf die Amor sein linkes Bein legt. Wie das Röntgenbild und das durchgewachsene Pentimento zeigen, war die Kante ursprünglich links über die Körperkontur hinaus weitergeführt, wurde dann aber vom Maler getilgt, übermalt und als Sitzmotiv durch den Globus ersetzt. Die spielerisch labile, aufreizend zudringliche Pose – eine Travestie von Michelangelos Sieger (Florenz, Palazzo Vecchio) – und das zweideutig spöttische Lächeln des Jünglings, den Caravaggio nach einem Modell aus dem Volk malte, unterstreichen die verbreitetste, schon im Giustiniani-Inventar (1638) anklingende, vor allem von Walter Friedlaender in seinen Caravaggio-Studien 1955 ausgeführte Deutung, daß der irdische Amor die höchsten moralischen und intellektuellen Werte des Menschen und die Ziele seines Ehrgeizes verspotte.| 200 Meisterwerke der europäischen Malerei :::::::::::::_ Around 1592/93, Caravaggio came to Rome from Lombardy, bringing with him formative impressions of the works of Savoldo, Lotto, Romanino and Moretto. He worked for a time in the workshop of Giuseppe Cesari, one of the leading late Mannerist painters, but soon broke with the conventions of Roman-Florentine Mannerism. His radically new approach – involving a direct recourse to nature, to reality, and the use of focused light and highly contrasting chiaroscuro as pictorial resources – revolutionized art in Rome around 1600, making him one of the pioneering painters of the 17th century alongside Annibale Carracci, Elsheimer, and Rubens. His first important public commission – the paintings for the Contarelli Chapel in San Luigi dei Francesi and the side paintings for the Cerasi Chapel in Santa Maria del Popolo – made him famous. Prominent families acquired or commissioned his works, among them the Mattei, Borghese, and Barberini, and in particular the Giustiniani, who numbered among his most important patrons, and at the same time the most progressive art collectors in Rome: the Marchese Vincenzo Giustiniani (1564–1637) and his brother, Cardinal Benedetto Giustiniani (1544–1637). Of five original works by Caravaggio formerly held in the collection, all of them acquired en bloc by the Prussian king in Paris in 1815, only two survived the immediate consequences of World War II: the Doubting Thomas in the pic ture gallery in Sanssouci (Potsdam), and the Love Triumphant of 1601–02. In accordance with Virgil’s words: “Omnia vincit amor” (Love Conquers All, Eclogae 10.69), the youthful God of earthly love, a smiling victor, triumphs over science, art, power and fame. The instruments and symbols of the “liberal arts”, the laurel of immortal (and primarily literary) fame, and the armor, a symbol of the art and the glory of war, lie scattered at his feet as trophies, the spoils of victory (according to Caravaggio’s biographer Bellori in 1672): on the left, a music manuscript and two stringed instruments, a violin and a lute, in front of them an angle and compass, the instruments of geometry; behind Amor’s right leg, partially hidden by the laurel branch, an opened, densely written manuscript and reed pen; on the right, near the edge of the picture, behind Amor’s left, bent-back leg, a crown and sceptre as insignia of worldly authority and power. Amor seems to be seated on a blue globe that is decorated with stars, suggesting that he triumphs over the entire world; at the same time, the celestial sphere alludes to the art of astronomy. It seems however to have been added by the painter later on. The boy does not really sit on the shallow curve of the globe, but instead on a ledge, from which the drapery falls down on the right-hand side, and on which he has braced his leg. As shown by X-ray images and extensive pentimenti, this edge originally continued leftward beyond the figure of Amor, but was then effaced, overpainted and replaced as a sitting surface by the globe.
